How do I know what my design style is?

What often creates the most inviting of home interiors isn't always a result of design know-how but the ability to bring your style to life. When your personality shines throughout your home, you’ve successfully created a space that reflects who lives in it, and there’s nothing more warm and welcoming than being unapologetically true to yourself.

As much as turning a house into a home is about aesthetics, it goes beyond the visual. Determining your design style and bringing it to life is a multi faceted experience. There are of course, still design fundamentals to consider in order to create cohesion and it is here in which the help of a designer can really elevate your personal style.

A few tips to help curate your style:

Consider who uses the space and what each individuals aesthetic is, differences in taste and style can become a point for contention when it comes to creating a cohesive space. So try to establish elements that you both like and see how those styles can be combined. Mixing and matching colours, patterns, old and new furniture can really give a space character, rather than detract from it. Combining pieces you both like will most likely lead to a more considered space than designating each other separate rooms.

Attempting to redesign your whole home in one go can be a daunting task. Breaking down the process and starting with a smaller space is a much easier way to reimagine your home or to experiment with new style ideas. Changing simple things like paint colour or swapping fabrics and hardware can be a small change that makes a big difference.

As with the fashion industry, we are all making a concious effort to buy better and avoid the fast fashion movemnet. This too goes for interior styling. The pieces you hold onto and carry with you through life reflect your style more authentically than what is on trend at the time. Step back from your space and look at what you already have. What brings you joy? Is it a piece of art? Can you draw colour, pattern or texture from it? Is it a table or a lamp? What do you love about them? We can often find our biggest inspirations from our smallest items. It’s not always necessary to completely overall your entire collection.
